How to Perform a Professional Interior Paint Job
Take your time and cover all floors with drop cloths, either canvas drop cloths or the disposable plastic type. Cover everything well, this is one area where an ounce of prevention is worth many tons of cure.
Once the floors are covered, start preparing the surfaces that are getting painted. Get some 80 to 150 grit sandpaper and sand all your walls and woodwork, making sure to work it down to a somewhat smooth finish. For super fine finishes, such as cabinets, you can use even finer grit sandpaper.
Up next is the filling of cracks and holes. For walls you might want to use either plaster patch or spackling, depending on the material; for woodwork, you may use a good brand of spackle. You could have to fill the holes and cracks more than one time. You should build up the repaired area so that it can sand down to a level finish.
OK, now it’s time to caulk! All your wood joints, corners, and seams need a fine job of caulking. Take a caulking gun and lay down an even bead, it’s best to hold a wet rag in one hand and gently wet the tip of your index finger as you smooth out the caulk deposited by the caulking gun. Remember to clean your hands often; it can be a very messy job!
Once the caulking is finished you are ready to proceed with priming. Prime over all surfaces that have raw wood or sanded spackling with a good quality interior primer, such as oil-based KILZ spray. Once you are done with the woodwork, proceed to prime any raw spackled wall repair areas with the same primer. As soon as all the primed surfaces dry hard, gently sand those with fine grit sandpaper.
Now, just before you are ready to start painting, remember that dust is your greatest enemy. Take the time to sweep and dust off all areas that are going to be painted. Make sure there is no dust or garbage that could fall into your painted areas. You might even consider taking a vacuum cleaner to the entire working area.
Paint the wall areas first, being extra careful not to spill paint. The skirtings are an item of constant worry because the wall paint could splatter them from the roller's down-stroke. Perhaps you might want to take some wide masking tape and tack it along the length of the baseboard tops, to keep them clean and splatter-free.
Paint all the trim work, beginning from the top toward the bottom. Do the crown moldings, windows and sashes, chair rails, then the doors and frames. Finally, paint all your skirtings. They are done last on account of possible dust and debris. Ok, you are done!
