It’s absolutely true, there was a time when you only needed to repaint the outside of your home about every 7/8 years but not any more. The question is, why does painting contractor’s paintwork start peeling off much quicker?
You don’t need to go back that far but during this period when the painting contractors came to paint your home you could rest assured that the paint would last at least 5 years before it started to flake and come undone.
We had our home painted every 5 years for the last forty years but the last few times we had the property painted it started flaking and peeling within two to three years.
It would be easy to blame the painting contractors but that is simply not the case as I have watched them prepare the windows, apply primer and suitable undercoats followed by top coats and still the paint peels off prematurely.
Clearly quite a few elements of the paint job have changed over the years so let’s take a look at some possibilities or probable causes as to why my paint is peeling off so quickly:
It is fairly reasonable to suggest that the more paint that is applied to external doors and windows the more likely it is that some of will start to flake off prematurely.
Tip 1: The key to a better paint job is to burn off from time to time – especially areas such as sills that are prone to cracking and blistering.
It is also fairly reasonable to expect poor quality paint to breakdown earlier than premium products.
Tip 2: Buy the best quality paint available for exteriors. You might spend £50.00 more on the costs of the materials but you extend the life of the work for another two to three years.
It’s a fact that the weather has become harsher with more harmful rays getting through the ozone layer.
Tip 3: Paintwork that is exposed to direct sunlight if far more likely to breakdown quicker. Consider a few extra coats of paint to these surfaces. On the ground floor consider the use of window awnings or patio awnings to protect paintwork. (Do you remember how old people used to hang a sun shade over their front doors in the summer)
As for the painting contractors not being as experienced I can tell you that this is not the case. They have better products, better tools and are far better equipped in general to provide you with a far better paint job than there predecessors.
